Costa Rica's Longevity Secrets: The Blue Zones
The Blue Zones: What we can learn from the Nicoya Peninsula in Costa Rica
One of my favorite books, The Blue Zones, by Dan Buetter, provides lessons for living longer from the people who’ve lived the longest. I particularly love this book, as it features the Nicoya Peninsula in Western Costa Rica, where I spent 3 months taking time for self care, hosting nutrition retreats, and leading private nutrition and “finding your passion” consultations at the amazing eco-hotel, Harmony Hotel in Nosara.
Costa Rica’s Longevity Secrets
- Have a plan de vida.
- Drink hard water.
- Keep a focus on family.
- Eat a light dinner.
- Maintain social networks.
- Keep hard at work.
- Get some sensible sun.
- Embrace a common history.
From these longevity secrets, I especially love “have a plan de vida”, which means that successful centenarians have a strong sense of purpose. They feel needed and want to contribute to a greater good.

HI Harry, Thank you so much! I've had some good "training" as I've been working with Dr. Andy Weil the last 7 years, am a graduate of the Institute for Integrative Nutrition, and I have lived this lifestyle for 3 decades (wow!). Plus, this work is my passion, so it's a joy to learn and share. Best to your new ventures. To good nutrition, Melanie
