EXPERIENCE NUTRITION: Quick Steel Cut Oats

QUICK AND EASY Steel Cut Oats with Your Favorite Nuts and Berries

Steel cut (Irish) oats are one of the best and simple breakfast grains. Simply, steel cut oats are whole oat kernels chopped into small pieces.  Relative to rolled oats which are processed and flatten, steel cut oats are lower on the glycemic load.  Steel cut oats digest more slowly than rolled oats (and instant oatmeal), so your blood sugar remains stable.

Steps to quickly prepare your oats.

 Ingredients and Tools

  • Rice cooker
  • 1 cup organic steel cut oats
  • 2 ½ cups water
  • 1 cup of your favorite nuts and berries (such as almonds, pistachios, walnuts, goji berries, Incan berries, Hunza raisins)
  • ½ teaspoon cinnamon
  • Some fresh fruit (apple, blueberries, strawberries)

Simple Steps

  • Rinse your steel cut oats
  • Pour your clean steel cut oats into your rice cooker
  • Add water
  • Add the nuts and seeds
  • Add the cinnamon

  • Turn on your rice cooker (The rice cooker will turn off when the steel cut oats have cooked.)
  • Take a shower
  • Come back to your kitchen, and your steel cut oats are ready to eat!
  • Add your favorite in-season fresh fruit and enjoy with some green tea.

    Hi,

This looks great. would love to cook steel cut oats in rice cooker but mine I don't think shuts off on its own. if not, roughly how long did you cook them for? I would set it to Porridge I think.

    thanks!

Hi Sue, Steel cut oats are the best...I use about 1 cup of oats with a little more than 2 cups of water, and love to add nuts, seeds, raisins and cinnamon. After you bring the oats, nuts and seeds to a boil, bring your heat down to a simmer, and cook for about 15-20 minutes. Enjoy! Melanie
