The 3 Fats You Must Eat

by Melanie Albert, Nutrition Expert, Founder & CEO, Experience Nutrition, Official Health & Wellness Partner, NFL Alumni

There’s so much confusion about fats, so here’s a quick check shopping list for the top 3 good fats

We must eat fat and not exclude fat from our diet, as we learned in the 70s no-fat  and low-fat craze.

Why Good Omega-3 Fats are Good for You
  • Reduce risk of heart disease and stroke
  • Help reduce symptoms of: hypertension, depression, ADHD, joint pain
  • Some research has shown: may boost the immune system. Supports brain health which can help protect from Alzheimer’s
The 3 Fats You Must Eat
  • Wild Alaskan Sockeye Salmon.  High levels of omega-3 fatty acids. Always wild, cold water. Cannot be farmed.  Great to simply grill with olive oil and spices.
  • Organic Extra Virgin Olive Oil. A monounsatured (good) fat. High quality organic extra virgin olive oils that leave a peppery cough after you taste it are great to reduce inflammation (like ibuprophen). Use  in your veggie stir-fries or fresh veggie salads.
  • Walnuts and other nuts. Good source of plant omega-3 fatty acids. Good for brain and heart health. Eat a small handful as a snack or add to your morning steel cut oats.
My Personal Action
I commit to eating all 3 of these good fats (wild Alaskan Sockeye Salmon, Organic Extra Virgin Olive Oil, and Walnuts) today!! Will grab a handful of nuts, take the salmon out of the freezer, and use olive oil on my salmon and fresh veggie salad.

I so agree with your comments on "fats you must eat." And I find there is still much confusion, with patients often reporting proudly how much they have cut down on fats in their diet, not understanding about "good fats, bad fats." But for many of my poorer patients, Wild Alaskan Salmon is out of the question. I am spending a lot of time promoting the value sardines in my practice, and hope they will get over their "Blue Collar" reputation!

Thanks Dr. Pendergrast...I totally agree with your comments. I love your idea of sharing the value of sardines, as a "good fat". I guess you are encouraging me to give them a try. Melanie
